Welcome to another addition of Wednesday Wonders! We’ve had some very pretty skies lately and  some interesting weather.

So, here’s three wonders from this last week.

1) The Burning Branch

The Burning BranchAs we were out walking today I happened to look over to my right and noticed that there was one branch on the pine tree that was bright red. So, instead of calling it the burning bush or the burning tree we named it the burning branch. I’ve always wondered what causes pine trees to turn red…

2) The Gorgeous Sky

Bright sun Surrounded by cloudsI’m not exactly sure what’s been going on with the sky lately but it has been so pretty. The clouds lay just right over the sun and the way the light filters through the clouds is just so beautiful. It seems that almost every time I look there’s something slightly different. I don’t watch clouds to look for shapes (I must not have that great of an imagination because most clouds just look like big fluffy white geometric shapes). I look at clouds to see how the light looks around the clouds. The little holes that it finds to shine through…

3) The air traffic control tower in the fog

Air Traffic Control Tower with FogThe other morning we had to get an early start and we were up and out before the  fog had even burned off. As we were driving along Mom noticed that the majority of the air traffic control tower was covered in fog. That’s not something you see everyday…

Bright SunlightHey ya’ll! I’m really sorry that there wasn’t a post yesterday! We lost our power again–this time it was out from 3:30 pm until about 10:15 pm. I’ll explain more about some of the lessons I’m learning without having electricity tomorrow. But for today’s wonders I’d like to show ya’ll the wonders of something we all take for granted: electricity.

I don’t think we realize how much we rely on our electric until we don’t have it anymore. So, without further fuss; here’s a few wonders about electric power!

1) Running Water

Since we moved in November we have been on a well. With that being said we loose water pressure when we loose power. Not that that’s a problem considering we have multiple gallons of drinking water stored in the basement. It’s just a major inconvenience to not get water from the faucet. It’s also amazing to think that there are miles and miles of pipe buried underneath our feet that brings water from the ground all the way up to our sinks and all we have to do is turn the faucet on. It’s that easy. We no longer have to carry heavy buckets of water from a well to our kitchens or bathrooms. Fresh clean water is available every time we need it. Just like that.

2) Light

I think light is another thing that we take for granted on a daily basis. We flip a switch and viola! Light! The Bible says that we are the light of the world (Matthew 5:16). But do we really understand light? Light provides a way to see when it’s dark. Light dispels the shadows. It makes the scary “monsters” loose their power. In the same way the light of God’s love dispels the lies of the enemy. The Light of His Word makes the scary “monsters” of this life loose their power. Why? Because “…perfect love casts out fear…” In the Light of His Presence the scary “monsters” don’t seem as scary when we remember the love that God has for us.

Hey ya’ll! I hope that you had a great Independence Day! Here’s a couple of wonders from this past weekend.

1) Writing with Sparklers

Sparkler Writing FlippedSparkler FlowerFor a while now I have wanted to try to write with sparklers. I found a helpful video online and gave it a shot. Considering that it was the very first time I had tried it and it was after midnight I don’t think it was too bad. I definitely want to practice again and improve my technique But I think this was a good start.

We went to see some fireworks on July 3rd and I decided to try to take some pictures with a slower shutter speed. Hopefully I would be able to photograph them as they were exploding in the air. And guess what? it worked!!! (: I was so happy with the results!

Hey Ya’ll! I’m really sorry for being gone for so long. I had a friend over on Friday (more on that tomorrow); and yesterday I was helping clean out and organize our family’s attic. But I’m back today with a few wonders for you! So, here we go!

1) Beautiful Sunset After the Rain

Sunset over flooded fieldFriday it didn’t just rain, it POURED. But after the rain cleared we had this beautiful sunset. I took picture after picture while we were taking my friend home. This one’s my favorite. I believe that it’s the sun setting above a partially flooded field.

2) The Baby Toad

Camouflaged ToadJojo and Mom found this little baby toad hanging out by the house last week. Just look how teeny he is! He loved to hop around and hide among the twigs on the ground. Because he’s so tiny he was really hard to spot. He was camouflaged with the ground… None the less I was still able to get a picture or two.

3) The Airplanes

Sky WritersOhio is known as the birthplace of Aviation. It’s also home to one of the Military’s air force bases and there’s a museum dedicated to our Nation’s air force history. We also have a yearly air show where some of the military’s best pilots preform. For the vast majority of my life I have lived very close to the airport, so every year for the airshow we’re able to get a pretty good seat from our  backyard. This year was no exception. On Sunday we were able to see the sky writers. These pilots do just what there name says: they write messages in the sky. It was actually really cool to not only see them do their thing but also to try and figure out what they were writing while looking around the trees.

Welcome to Summer! Today is the official start to Summer. Here’s a few wonders from the past week.

1) The Summer Solstice

In case you were wondering today is the longest day of the entire year. I always think that that’s  really neat. I heard somewhere that my little section of southern Ohio has about 15 hours of daylight today. And as a bonus we start loosing daylight in the very near future; which means that Fall is just around the corner!! (YAY!)

2) This Picture of the Moon

Moon and power linesI love pictures of sunsets and the moon. The other night when we were out driving we saw a full moon. I snapped a picture or two and was very pleased with this one. I love the way that the power lines are all around the moon but not intersecting it.

3) The Vulture

Turkey VultureAbout a week ago Mom came and told me to grab my camera and take a picture of this vulture. He was hanging out on the neighbor’s roof. I was really surprised that he stayed put as long as he did especially when I had to  go inside and get a longer lens. Once I got a couple of really good pictures I decided to zoom in on the individual photos and was very shocked to see that he was eyeing me. As I looked closer at the images I realized that he was looking over his shoulder at me as if to say, “Why on earth are you taking my picture?”

Hey Ya’ll! I hope that you’re having a great start to your week! It’s been a little warm here in Ohio and pouring rain at times this morning but that doesn’t mean there aren’t some wonders to be found. Let’s get started, shall we?

1) Baby Birds

Baby Birds in nest

While doing some yard work for a friend she informed us about the little birds that had made her bush their home. I went back with Dad to see if I could get a picture and it turns out that Mama birds aren’t very friendly toward short human photographers. I couldn’t get high enough to take the picture! So I had Daddy take it for me. The best part was that we didn’t get attacked by an angry Mama bird and the picture turned out great!

2) Playful Bunnies

Bunny Posing for the cameraThe other day we were out doing some work for another friend and noticed these little bunnies playing near her yard. It was fun to watch them dart around a big pine tree and up and down the side walk just playing around in the nice weather. I ended up getting several really good pictures and at one point one of the bunnies stopped and posed for a picture.

3) Yucca Plant Blooming

Yucca Plant in BloomA few weeks ago I noticed this Yucca plant was beginning to bloom. I have been keeping an eye on it and decided to photograph it today when there was a break in the rain. I love the small delicate flowers.

Hey Ya’ll! Can you believe that today’s the last day of May? Where did the last 5 months go?!? Here’s the last May Wonders…

1) Our “Stone Wall”

"Stone Wall"We’ve been doing some work on our flower beds. We decided to take up the rock border and discovered that it consisted of two layers of long heavy rocks. We moved all those rocks up against the shed and built our selves a “stone wall”.

2) Mr. Red Throat

Ruby Throated Hummingbird

We’ve recently put a couple of hummingbird feeders near our front porch. It took a little while for the birds to find us but they finally have. Usually it’s the male Ruby-throated humming Bird whom we’ve named Mr. Red Throat. His Wife Mrs. Green Feather has been seen a couple of times, but she’s not not yet become a regular.

3) The Deep Blue Sky

Deep Blue Sky and White Puffy CloudsI was out taking a few pictures and noticed how blue the sky was. It really made the white puffy clouds pop.

Happy Wednesday Y’all! I hope that you are having a great start to your week! Here’s a few of the wonders that I’ve seen lately.

1) The Brave Toad

ToadThis little toad was very brave. We discovered him on the shed patio a week or so ago. I went out to get some pictures and I discovered that he was very photogenic. I was able to lay down on my stomach and get relatively close to him and he didn’t seem to get scared. Dad even stood behind him stepping on the grass to try and get him to jump. I wasn’t able to get a picture of him jumping. However I did get a couple of really good up close shots. I was so close that I could actually see him breathing… That was pretty cool.

2) Deer

DeerIn the old house we alway saw deer across the street. We didn’t see too many this Fall. However, we were doing some yard work out front recently and guess what we saw? Two deer across the street!! (: I was able to run in the house and get my zoom lens, I then ran to the edge of our yard with the lens zoomed in as much as possible. I was able to get some really good pictures. All I did with the image is crop it slightly so that you can see the deer more easily.

Hey Ya’ll! We’ve been really busy the past couple of days but there’s been quite a few wonders that I have noticed in the last week.

1) Pretty Little Flowers:

PrimroseOn Saturday we were doing some yard work for a friend and she graciously gave me permission to share her pretty flowers with you. She said that they are Primroses who happen to be very invasive. So, every so often she has to got out and make sure to pull them back so that they don’t take over her whole flower garden. I liked these flowers because the petals looked so small and delicate. I was able to get a few really good close ups with my phone.

Raindrops on a PetuniaIn other news, we managed to get some curb appeal out front (YAY! More about this on Friday). Mom had just watered the plants as we were getting ready to leave and I noticed that the Petunias had some water drops  on them and decided to get a couple of pictures. Again, these were just taken on my phone.

2) Another Sunset:

Flag in Front on SunsetI love sunsets. The other night we were coming home and the sky was colored with another beautiful sunset. I naturally started taking several pictures and when I looked at them later I found this gem. I love the colors behind the flag. It’s almost as though the flag is silhouetted.

All of the photos that are in this post were taken with my phone. I say that to tell you that you don’t need a big fancy expensive camera to take great pictures. Sure there are some things that you can do with a DSLR that you can’t do with a cell phone but I do use my phone quite frequently and am usually pleased with the results.

Hey Ya’ll, happy Wednesday!

I’ve decided to do something a little different this week. I’ll still be sharing Wonders as usual but, instead of the pictures being from seperate days they were all taken on the same day around the same time.

Scenes from the kitchen window…

We have a front porch off of the kithen door. The awning that covers the porch is a local bird hang out. The birds love to hang out in the little triangle parts. I’ve always wanted to get some really good bird pictures.

So one day last week I decided that I was going to attempt to photograph these birds. The screens on the kitchen windows move up and down so I opened the window and the screen and waited. I didn’t see any birds but I was able to sit there look at my surroundings and get a couple of really good pictures that I’d like to share with you.

School house bird feeder surrounded by trees

One of the things that I love about this picture is the simplicty. It’s a bird feeder surrounded by trees.  I really like the little pop of color provided by the bird house. It gives you something more to look at. The pillars on either end of the photo along with the bird house also break up the sea of green nicely.

School house bird feeder surrounded by trees

This picture is actually my favorite shot that I got that afternoon. I love the depth of field in the picture (how the ends of the string are really clear and the lamp post is very blurry). In fact we call this very lamp post our Narnia lamp post. (:

Water Pump I just thought that this one was cool. I like the old-fashioned-ness of this picture with the water pump and the thermometer. It’s not quite as clear as I would like but but I still enjoy looking at it.

I hope that these encourage and remind you  that you don’t even have to leave your house to get good pictures. I was literally sitting on the floor of the kitchen with my camera on the window sill.
